Redondo Beach Treated to a Rare Visit from Giant Blue Whales! – The Palos Verdes Peninsula has been treated to a rare visit from the endangered giant blue whale. Swells of krill – tiny, shrimplike creatures – have attracted the blue whales as this is their favorite food! The Pacific waters have been cooler recently due to wind-generated upwelling that forces the cooler water to the surface. There are only 2000 blue whales known to live in the Pacific Ocean and to have about 100 of them sighted in the South Bay is a rare treat. They are visible from the Esplanade in South Redondo Beach, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, San Pedro and other towns as far south as Huntington Beach.
